Health Plan of Nevada (HPN) and Sierra Health and Life (SHL) provide affordable healthcare plans for thousands of individuals throughout the United States. When it comes to Nevada health plans, one size does not fit all. That's why we offer a variety of health plans to fit your health insurance needs.
HPN is Nevada's oldest and most experienced health maintenance organization (HMO), providing Nevadans with quality health care since 1982. The reason for our success? We understand your unique goals and offer Nevada health insurance plans to fit your individual lifestyle and match your personal and/or business needs.
HPN Plan Types and Typical Coverage:
SHL is a California-domiciled life and health indemnity insurance company established in 1906. Acquired by Sierra Health Services, Inc. (SHS) in 1986, Sierra Health and Life is currently licensed in 43 states and the District of Columbia.
SHL Plan Types and Typical Coverage:
When it comes to Health Plan of Nevada, you’ll either have a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plan or a Point-of-Service (POS) plan. You’ll save money when you stay within your plan’s network.
HMO plans typically have low out-of-pocket costs but are required to choose a primary care provider (PCP) and stay within the network. When a specialist is needed, you’ll typically need a referral from your PCP if needed.
POS plans offer the most flexibility with three tiers for a plan tailored to your needs:
While traveling outside of your plan’s service area, you typically have coverage for urgent care and emergency care. However, it’s important to keep in mind that if you go to the emergency room and it’s not a true emergency, you may be responsible for the cost of the visit.
Additionally, most plans offer 24/7 access to NowClinic® Virtual Visits for common care needs to connect you to a provider online. However, this is not for urgent or emergency.

2006 HPN was informed by the Purchasing Department of the State of Nevada, Department of Administration, of its intent to award HPN a contract with the Division of Healthcare Financing and Policy (DHCFP) to provide certain Medicaid services.
HPN and SHL were selected by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to participate for 2007 in the stand-alone prescription drug plan (PDP), Medicare Advantage HMO, Local and Regional PPO programs, and the Medicare Advantage Private Fee-For-Service (PFFS) program.
HPN is awarded an accreditation status of "Commendable" from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), an independent, not-for-profit organization dedicated to measuring the quality of America's healthcare. Accreditation is for the Commercial HMO, Commercial POS, and Medicare HMO product lines in Nevada, effective May 2006.
