HealthPartners has a long history going back to 1937, when a group of Minnesotans helped people pay their hospital bills and inspired a prepaid health plan. At the time, prepaid medicine was illegal in the state, so these individuals worked together to change the laws.

In 1957, they established Group Health, one of the first consumer-governed prepaid health plans in the nation. After decades of expanding its reach, Group Health merged with MedCenters Health Plan and formed HealthPartners.
